7 Tips for Keeping Your Fresh Flowers Fresh Longer
Most people buy fresh flowers because they want to add some color and life to their home or office, but how often do you find yourself disappointed with how quickly your natural flowers wilt and die? Adding flowers to your space adds wonderful scent, bright colors, and warmth that you can’t get from artificial flowers, but if you aren’t careful with them, they won’t last as long as you want them to. Here are seven tips for keeping your flowers fresh longer.
1) Cut the Stems Short
If you want your flowers to last as long as possible, you need to start with a clean cut. Use a sharp knife or pair of scissors to snip off about an inch from the bottom of the stem at a 45-degree angle. This will help the flower absorb more water and prevent it from rotting.
2) Use Cold Water
One of the most important things you can do to keep your flowers fresh is to use cold water. When you cut the stems of your flowers, be sure to use a sharp knife or pruning shears. This will help prevent the stem from bruising and will allow the flower to take in more water. Be sure to change the water every few days, and add a fresh flower food packet if you have one. You can also add a penny or two to the vase to help keep the flowers fresh.
3) Place In A Vase That Is Half Full Of Water
Flowers are beautiful, but they don't last forever. Here are some tips to help keep your flowers looking fresh longer:
1. Start with a clean vase. Bacteria can build up in vases and shorten the life of your flowers.
2. Fill the vase half full with lukewarm water. Cold water can shock the flowers and cause them to wilt.
3. Add flower food according to the package directions.
4) Add-In Sugars, Not Fertilizers
When you pick up your flowers from the grocery store or florist, they’ve likely been treated with a sugar solution. This is because sugar helps flowers stay hydrated and fresh longer. So, when you get your flowers home, add a quarter teaspoon of sugar to the vase water. You can also add a drop of bleach to prevent bacteria build-up.
5) Trim Leaves If Necessary
When you first get your flowers, trim about an inch off the bottom of the stems at a 45-degree angle. This will help them absorb water more easily. You should also remove any leaves that will fall below the water line in the vase. Once you've trimmed the stems and removed any excess leaves, it's time to move on to the next step.
6) Open the Vase Everyday
One way to keep your flowers fresh is to open the vase every day and mist the stems with water. This provides them with the hydration they need to stay healthy and prevents them from wilting. Plus, it’s a good way to check on your flowers and make sure they’re doing alright.
7) Store Properly
When you first get your flowers, be sure to store them properly! Cut the stems at an angle and put them in clean water. If you're not ready to arrange them yet, keep them in a cool, dark place.
